With upright stems bearing purple trumpets lined with white, Penstemon ‘Pensham Plum Jerkum’ is an attractive front of border perennial which will provide vibrant colour for months from early summer through to autumn. Semi-evergreen leaves mean continued interest even in winter. Bred to withstand low temperatures, dry spells and high rainfall, this reliable performer thrives in sun or semi shade. Penstemon plants dislike cold, wet soils in winter. Plant them in a well drained site, adding compost or well rotted manure to amend heavy clay soils. Choose a position in full sun or semi shade.
Feed and water Penstemon plants regularly until they are fully established. Cut back faded Penstemon flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure around the crown of each plant in autumn or spring. Avoid pruning back old foliage until spring arrives, as this will help to protect the plant during winter.
